Circumcision is surgery to remove the prepuce or foreskin of the penis. The prepuce or foreskin is a hood of skin covering the glans penis. The most common reason to remove the foreskin or circumcision, other than religious, is when there is a tightening of the opening of the foreskin. This is known as phimosis. When this occurs, the foreskin cannot be retracted to expose the glans. The glans cannot be properly cleaned. This leads to accumulation of dirt or smegma behind the foreskin resulting in possible infection. During circumcision, the foreskin is excised. When laser beam is used to perform the excision, it is known as Laser circumcision. Laser circumcision is the preferred method of treatment for children. Laser circumcision gives a clean and neat incision with little bleeding as the laser seals the small blood vessels at the cut edges. Both normal circumcision and laser circumcision may be performed under local, regional or general anesthesia. No overnight hospital stay is required for circumcision. UroSurgery Mt.
