 Disturbances or problems with urination can be inconvenient and sometimes incapacitating. It is common and affects people of all ages. Many different conditions manifest with changes in urination patterns.


What are the common problems in urination?

Problems in urination may manifest as:

  1. Frequency
    This refers to an increase in feeling the need to urinate.

  2. Urgency
    This is a strong and sudden urge to urinate.

  3. Nocturia
    Urinating frequently at night is known as nocturia.

  4. Hesitancy
    This is difficulty initiating urination.

  5. Weak Stream
    This refers to a loss of force in the urine stream.

  6. Intermittency
    Stopping and starting again several times during urination is intermittency.

  7. Incomplete Emptying
    The feeling of incomplete emptying suggests urine remaining in the bladder after urination.

  8. Terminal Dribbling
    This is when residual urine leaks after urination.

  9. Dysuria
    This refers to pain on urination.

  10. Urinary incontinence
    This can be defined as the involuntary loss or flow of urine.

  11. Inability to pass urine or urine retention.


What could cause these urinary symptoms?

The initial symptoms in the list are termed Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms. One of the commonest causes for LUTS in men is prostate enlargement. Benign Prostate Hyperplasia or enlargement is termed BPH.

However, LUTS together with the other symptoms may also be due to other equally common afflictions such as urinary tract infection or UTI. UTI is one of the most frequent reasons for a visit to the doctor especially among women. However it can also affect men.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of any part of the urinary system, which comprises of the bladder, kidneys and ureters and urethra, which is the passage from the bladder to the outside. UTI usually starts in the bladder or urethra but can spread to the kidneys.

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence can be defined as involuntary urine loss or flow. This may be seen as a loss of bladder control. 

Symptoms can range from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting. It can happen to anyone, but it becomes more common with age. Urinary incontinence hinders normal activities and can be debilitating.
